Jack put his empty bottle aside and stood up. On the point of leaving, her challenge had stopped him in his tracks.

‘What do you mean by that?’ he asked, unable to prevent himself from scowling but careful to keep his voice neutral. He had picked up on her truculence, for which he couldn’t entirely blame her, but he wasn’t about to be accused of colluding with Logan’s criminal enterprise without fighting his corner.

‘I didn’t mean that the way it sounded,’ she said, waving a half-hearted apology.

‘Then what did you mean, Callie?’ Jack struggled to keep his temper in check. ‘Let’s clear the air here. If you think I’m in this with Logan then come right out and say so, ’cause the way I see things, I could finish up doing time for something I knew nothing about.’

‘I know. I’ve said I’m sorry. What I meant was that we have different agendas. I want revenge, and my money back if absolutely possible, but I’ll settle for Logan being publicly exposed for the scumbag that he is. At least that way he won’t be able to con anyone else. But you… well, as you yourself just pointed out, you could be implicated, especially if Logan has devised a way to make it look as though you were in on the fraud, which I wouldn’t put past him. Naturally, you will want to cover your own back, even if that means sweeping this business under the rug.’

‘You think that’s what I’ll do?’ He shook his head. ‘You really don’t know me at all.’

‘Well, let’s be honest, I don’t. We only just met.’

‘I’m not Logan,’ he said, his temper abating. ‘I can see why you might think that way and I know I have to earn your trust.’ He sat down again. ‘But yeah, if you’ll have me, let’s work together and bring the bastard down.’

‘Sorry if I insulted your integrity.’ She sent him a placatory smile. ‘I have trust issues at the best of times, which is why I’m still kicking myself for letting Logan into my life.’

‘Don’t beat yourself up over it. I’ve seen him in action. He can be very persuasive and plausible.’

‘Thanks for trying to make me feel better about myself.’

‘You’re welcome.’ He smiled at her. ‘Is it working?’

She waggled one hand from side to side. ‘Some.’ She glanced down at her lap. ‘Any idea how to trap him? You know him better than I do. A lot better. What would he be unable to resist?’

‘The chance to make a quick buck,’ Jack said, without hesitation. ‘He’s never stopped trying to impress his father. And Farquhar, too, but he never could.’

‘Perhaps they both saw through him.’

‘Perhaps, but in Farquhar’s case that only happened after he enticed Logan into marrying Portia.’

‘He could have pulled the rug if he thought Logan was no good for his daughter.’

‘You’re forgetting that Portia wouldn’t have stood for it. She can teach a mule a thing or two about stubbornness when her mind’s made up. But
