Jack put his empty bottle aside and stood up. On the point of leaving, her challenge had stopped him in his tracks.
âWhat do you mean by that?â he asked, unable to prevent himself from scowling but careful to keep his voice neutral. He had picked up on her truculence, for which he couldnât entirely blame her, but he wasnât about to be accused of colluding with Loganâs criminal enterprise without fighting his corner.
âI didnât mean that the way it sounded,â she said, waving a half-hearted apology.
âThen what did you mean, Callie?â Jack struggled to keep his temper in check. âLetâs clear the air here. If you think Iâm in this with Logan then come right out and say so, âcause the way I see things, I could finish up doing time for something I knew nothing about.â
âI know. Iâve said Iâm sorry. What I meant was that we have different agendas. I want revenge, and my money back if absolutely possible, but Iâll settle for Logan being publicly exposed for the scumbag that he is. At least that way he wonât be able to con anyone else. But you⦠well, as you yourself just pointed out, you could be implicated, especially if Logan has devised a way to make it look as though you were in on the fraud, which I wouldnât put past him. Naturally, you will want to cover your own back, even if that means sweeping this business under the rug.â
âYou think thatâs what Iâll do?â He shook his head. âYou really donât know me at all.â
âWell, letâs be honest, I donât. We only just met.â
âIâm not Logan,â he said, his temper abating. âI can see why you might think that way and I know I have to earn your trust.â He sat down again. âBut yeah, if youâll have me, letâs work together and bring the bastard down.â
âSorry if I insulted your integrity.â She sent him a placatory smile. âI have trust issues at the best of times, which is why Iâm still kicking myself for letting Logan into my life.â
âDonât beat yourself up over it. Iâve seen him in action. He can be very persuasive and plausible.â
âThanks for trying to make me feel better about myself.â
âYouâre welcome.â He smiled at her. âIs it working?â
She waggled one hand from side to side. âSome.â She glanced down at her lap. âAny idea how to trap him? You know him better than I do. A lot better. What would he be unable to resist?â
âThe chance to make a quick buck,â Jack said, without hesitation. âHeâs never stopped trying to impress his father. And Farquhar, too, but he never could.â
âPerhaps they both saw through him.â
âPerhaps, but in Farquharâs case that only happened after he enticed Logan into marrying Portia.â
âHe could have pulled the rug if he thought Logan was no good for his daughter.â
âYouâre forgetting that Portia wouldnât have stood for it. She can teach a mule a thing or two about stubbornness when her mindâs made up. But
